Ludlow: Local Knowledge
One of Britain’s more hidden historical gems, Ludlow is something of a living time capsule perched on a cliff above the River Teme. Its current layout dates back the best part of 1000 years to Norman times when it was established partly as a guard post on the Welsh ‘Marches’ in troubled times, and a bustling centre for wool from the Welsh hills in peacetime.
It’s gloriously quaint, with perfectly preserved beamed houses and wonderful pubs and tea rooms. Ludlow Castle, originally a Norman stronghold and later a stately Elizabethan residence, has played home to kings, queens and princes - Catherine of Aragon spent her honeymoon here. Now in ruins the grounds are still used for a mixture of concerts and events.
Best of all, Ludlow remains remarkably unspoiled. The architecture is fascinating, a market is held three times a week in the old square, the standard of restaurants and food is completely unexpected for ‘Olde Worlde England’ and throughout the summer you’ll find a host of festivals and events including a May Fair.
That most quintessential of Englishmen, one-time Poet Laureate John Betjeman, described Ludlow as ‘the most perfect town in England’. Locals, visitors, gourmets, bookworms, antique collectors and those who have come to visit us at Premier Medical seem to agree.
