Fracture

A discontinuity in bone. Many terms exist such as hairline fracture break, but all mean the same.

Children are prone to “greenstick” fractures where the bone bends and therefore is not discontinuous, but abnormally shaped.

The nature of the break may be transverse (straight across), oblique (at an angle) or spiral (to the shaft of the bone).

A fracture dislocation is a fracture which results in the bone not articulating (moving) with its joint fully.

Displacement means the fragments are separated by varying degrees from their original correct positions.
