EWI Annual Conference 2008

The Expert Witness Institute’s Annual Conference is one of the
largest gatherings of expert witnesses across all the professions.
Topics of importance will be addressed by high-profile speakers
from politics and the media, as well as by experts at the top their
professions.
We welcome Lord Owen (David Owen, famous as a politician, but
before that a doctor) as our keynote speaker. He will speak on the
illnesses of world leaders and the experts that keep them in
business.
Other topics addressed will include the fallout from Holdsworth,
and the often ill-informed media coverage of other recent cases,
which has discouraged some from undertaking expert witness
work. Joshua Rozenberg the BBC’s Legal Affairs Consultant will
discuss the media’s role, and as a legal commentator of high
calibre will try to restore the balance which has been signally
absent from much that appears in the press and on television.
We are privileged to welcome Professor Jeremy Horder,
distinguished lawyer and Law Commissioner, who will bring us up
to date with the Law Commission’s current work and thinking on
the Expert Evidence in Criminal Trials, which is currently such a
hot topic.
There will be three specialist workshops, provided by Surveyors,
Forensic accountants and Medical experts. Our popular Question
Time Session will be chaired by Bernie Rowe of Lyons Davidson
founder and former Chairman of MASS.
The conference will be stimulating and challenging, as well as
informative, but there will be light relief as well. Jacqueline Storey’s
talk on ‘The Expertise of the Choreographer’ will include practical
demonstrations of dance from professional dancers, and will
provide an insight into a fascinating field of expertise.
We strongly commend the event to all expert witnesses. The
conference will provide the opportunity to meet and share views
and experiences with colleagues in your own and other fields. We
are delighted to be presenting a programme which promises to
be challenging, exciting and relevant, and enjoyable too.
Do be sure to attend, and think of bringing a guest from your own
or another field, with the aim of introducing them to the challenge,
fascination and rewards of legal work. The Justice System needs
you as much if not more than ever.
